Imagine the amount of time you could save by being organized.

How many times have you told yourself each new year, I’ll get organized. My hand is raised high because I’m guilty. It seems every year I continue to collect and hold on to things that are no longer needed. If you are like me, then this blog post is definitely for you. Why does it take a new year to occur before we take the initiative to get organized? Try following these five steps to getting your home organized in 2021. You will be glad you did.

1. Perform a Walk-Through

The hallway leads to various rooms in the house.

This is a good time to take a stroll through the house. Grab a cellphone or use the old fashion method of pen and paper to record your findings. Go into every room and identify things that you are no longer using. Start with the bedrooms. Look around and list any furniture pieces that are no longer serving a purpose. Have you checked the mattress condition lately? Are there old chairs, baby items, or old desks that need to be taken away? What about an old table or tv that is taking up space? Maybe there is an old rug that doesn’t match your room decor anymore. Why hold on to these things unnecessarily? Making a list helps when it comes time to remove the items you found for disposal.

The kitchen is the most visited room in the house.

Next, make your way into the kitchen. Women have a tendency to buy lots of cookware, kitchenware, and utensils. But really, how many pots and pans do you actually need? Go through the cabinets thoroughly and list the ones that are damaged and look old or rusted out. List any worn gadgets, utensils, or appliances that no longer perform as it did when originally purchased. Being organized at home is definitely an added bonus to help you save time and money in the kitchen.

Most people use their garages for storage space.

Don’t forget to review the garage as this area is an important extension to the house too. The garage is usually where most non-functioning things get stored. Items like boxes, yard tools, patio chairs, tables, old exercise equipment, and old office equipment are usually tossed into the garage. The garage becomes a storage space for untouched items.

2. Determine Your Budget

A good planner always has a budget in place.

Money should be set aside for cleaning because it is a part of getting organized. Have you thought about what should be included in the cleanup and organizing process? Will the closets need to be modified with added shelving or rods? Will the carpet need to be shampooed? Are there plans to hire a maid to come in and assist with the cleanup? How will you store items? Will there be a need to purchase boxes, storage tubs, or totes? Some people find it more convenient to store things in an external factory direct storage shed. If using a shed, would you build it yourself or hire someone to do this work. There’s definitely a variety of ways to organize. You want to always plan ahead such that there are no surprises.

3. Contact Local Charities

The Salvation Army is one of the most popular charities.

Donating is a great way to help you get organized. There are local charities that will gladly accept used and unwanted household items. Many charities have drop-off as well as pick up services such as The Salvation Army, Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, Furniture Bank Association, and Big Brother Big Sister. How convenient to have someone else pick up your stuff that you no longer want. I believe there is truth to the saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.

4. Decide on Storage Space

Exterior sheds are great for storing items.

A part of organizing is to determine what spaces you have available to store items. Whether you plan to utilize the basement, garage, extra closet spaces, or an outside shed for storage, a good plan should be developed upfront. If you decide to build from scratch, hire a contractor to build it, or buy a prefabricated outbuilding online, there will be additional things to consider. Have you considered the outdoor yard space to accommodate an external building?

Vertical saws are great for cutting.

Building a shed from scratch is probably the least expensive route to take, but it requires the right equipment and tools in order to be successful. The construction of a shed should take around 4 to 6 days, depending on the size and amount of people working the job. If you live in the Atlanta area, the Georgia business Saw Trax is known for providing the best equipment for construction projects. They have been around since 1988 and have panel saws, handcarts, and dollies plus coro claws. Their most popular product is the vertical panel saw which features a steel bearing system and patented alignments Accu-Square alignment systems. The 1000 Series Vertical Panel Saw is for woodworkers, cabinet makers, and other customers that need a vertical panel saw to precision cut sheets up to 1¾ inches thick. This Vertical Panel Saw offers the precision, accuracy, ease of use, and safety that sets Saw Trax panel saws apart. Imagine how much time you could save by simply having the right equipment.
